What is Aquatic Therapy?
Veterinary medicine has made some incredible advances in the past two decades, one of which is in the area of physical rehabilitation. The benefits of human physical therapy have been adapted to meet the needs of our beloved pets.
Research shows that loss of muscle mass begins about 24 hours following a serious injury or surgery. With aquatic therapy, we're able to help pets exercise in water as a treatment to assist in physical rehabilitation and pain relief.
Buoyancy helps to reduce pressure on joints, and resistance provided from water exercise has proven effective in increasing range of motion and muscle strength.
Uses for Aquatic Therapy
- Arthritis
- Hip dysplasia
- Improving joint function
- Muscle strengthening
- Rehabilitation after neurological injuries
- Rehabilitation after orthopedic surgeries
- Spondylosis
The Process
Warm water temperatures help provide relief to sore joints and muscles while offering safe physiotherapy for muscle conditioning.
Water depth is adjusted based on your pet's size and their specific requirements.
Animals often use their injured limb when supported by water, decreasing recovery time and rebuilding their strength.
Aquatic therapy also allows an outlet for your pet's energy that they can't otherwise use while injured.
